The Südtiroler Unterland offers a variety of nature and landscapes

The Südtiroler Unterland offers an impressive variety of nature and landscapes. As it is situated in the sub-Mediterranean climate zone and the region enjoys on average 200 hours of sunshine from April. While the valley basin is nearly totally covered by orchards, the soft hills are covered in vineyards, cypress trees and colourful mixed forests. The green woodlands reach to an altitude of 1,800 metres above sea level and pass into fruitful meadows and the peaks of the Mendel mountain range.
At the Fennberg, at an altitude of 1,060 metres, there is a small lake, which reaches bathing temperature in the summer. Near the access road, you will find a group of 5 giant trees, which can be seen from afar. Another 30 of this type of tree can be found in the nearby forest. Experienced hikers can reach the Fenn high plateau either via the old Fenner Weg from Margreid or via a quite difficult climbing path, which leads you uphill across the steep Dolomite walls from south of Magreid.
On the opposite side of the valley the Albrecht-Dürer-Weg begins. During his Italian travels in 1494, he had to choose a road over the mountains to Segonzano due to flooding. This hiking path reflects many of his impressions in aquarelles and drawings. Only a 30 minute’ drive away, you will find the access route to the Bletterbach canyon, an impressive canyon at the foot of the Weisshorn mountain, which clearly represents the history of our planet. The visitor centre offers some background information. However, it is far more impressive to arrange for a guided hiking trip through the canyon. During the summer, there are also special guided tours available for children. The newly established forest teaching trail is also suitable for wheelchairs and prams.
